The first atomic bomb, a plutonium based device, was detonated on July 16, 1945, at 5:30 am on a remote corner of the Alamogordo, NM, Bombing Range known as "Jornada del Muerto" (Journey of the Dead).  The site of the test was named "Trinity" by Robert Oppenheimer.  On August 16, 1945, an untested uranium based device named "Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.  On August 9, 1945, a plutonium device, similar to the "Trinity" device, named "Fat Man" was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.
