Forbes magazine and the Milken Institute have declared Las Cruces, NM, the best small metro area (populations below 177,000) as well as 37th overall for business and careers, for 2002. Las Cruces has also received top 10 selections in various categories by specialized industries, retirement, and other ranking sources during the past decade.

New Mexico State University's Physical Science Laboratory, White Sands Missile Range, along with the subsequent and supporting high tech business base have helped drive Las Cruces into this position. The rankings are based on job growth and earned income, plus a measure of activity in critical technologies that foster future growth.
