Theodore von Karman 1881-1963

Dr. Theodore von Karman (1881-1963) was the co-founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).  From Budapest, Hungary, he immigrated to the United States in 1930 to head the prestigious Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology.  In 1944, he chaired the Army Air Force's Scientific Advisory Group, which researched rocketry, guided missiles, and jet propulsion.

Corporal_3.jpgIn 1936, a small group of rocket enthusiasts at the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology (GALCIT) was given permission to organize a research project to investigate rocketry and its related topics. 

In 1944, with sponsorship from the U.S. Army Ordnance Department, the GALCIT group initiated the research and development of a succession of rocket test vehicles, one of which became the first U.S. Army tactical guided missile, the CORPORAL – This was the American Rocket!
