On September 8, 1944, the first V2 hit Southwest London.  By 1945 more than 1100 V2 Rockets had been launched into Great Britain.  The Germans had indeed successfully militarized the rocket!!  As might be expected, the United States interest had perked up – not for space exploration as Goddard had envisioned, but for the now obvious military purposes.  The V2 rocket had remarkable resemblance to Goddard's designs.

Under the direction of Wernher von Braun, the V-2 Rocket was developed at the Peenemuende Rocket Center in 1937.   von Braun was born in Wirsitz, Germany, (now Wyrzysk, Poland) on 23 March 1912.  He earned his bachelor's degree at the age of 20 from the University of Berlin, where he also received his doctorate in physics in 1934. Near the end of World War II, he led more than 100 of his rocket team members to surrender to the Allied powers.
